Like many people I know, I had a semi-serious dislike of leather jackets. I’m not sure why I actually grew up not loving the look of a leather jacket or the look of just about anyone who wore a leather jacket. But recently everything changed when I decided to buy a motorcycle.
As much as I always hated the look of a leather jacket, I always wanted to own a motorcycle. It seems like a contradiction, and I guess it was. Anyway, the opportunity to buy a recently used motorcycle fell onto my lap and I accepted the offer. He knew that owning a motorcycle would change a lot more than the way he had to work. It only took me a few days to have a motorcycle and a few conversations with friends to realize that I really needed a leather jacket for my new ride.
I needed a new leather jacket, they said, not only because all riders should have one, but also because a leather jacket is the safest thing to wear in an accident. I was thinking about having an accident on my motorcycle and that was the only form of conviction I needed before I went out and started buying my own leather jacket. I brought with me a couple of more experienced friends who gave me their opinions on where to find the right leather jacket and how to decide which style suits me best.
I had a little fun shopping for a leather jacket. I felt like one of the motorcycle guys I used to make fun of in high school would walk into the store and make fun of me for becoming one of them. I tried to put these thoughts behind me and get the job done – getting the perfect leather jacket. I must have tried on a score of leather jackets and carefully debated the details of each one. Buying decisions have never been easy for me and buying a leather jacket was no exception.
Once I found the perfect leather jacket for my new style and motorcycle riding needs, I got feedback from a couple of friends to confirm it and then bought the leather jacket. I have had my leather jacket for a few months. He used it almost every day, whether he needed it for a motorcycle ride or not. I never thought I’d become someone who really loves a leather jacket, but I’m afraid I’ve irretrievably fallen into that category of people and I love it.
