  1. I also used a TI-89 during my ChE undergrad.
Some free advice: Read the manual. It’s no help if you don’t know what it can do.
    Also, you might look at:
Octave – a free matlab clone
Macsyma – a powerful, free computer algebra system
Mathcad – Mathcad is expensive, but sometimes universities negotiate really good discounts for their students. It makes doing long complicated calculations with units a breeze.

  2. i have always known texas instruments as a good professional calculator. You really should ask your teacher though they know what is suitable since they are teaching the class right??? You cant be prepared for something you dont know of.

  3. TI 89 will work just fine. the texas instrument website has all sorts of extra applications you can download as well. I haven’t checked myself but I bet there is a chemistry app.

  4. i have recently obtained a ti-83 it’s not bad for an old calculator
    i would recomend a ti-83,ti-84,ti-85,or a ti-86
they all function and operate well and offer graphing

  5. The best calculator for a chem eng like us must have regression or if you are allowed a graphing calculator…
Many chem subjects and higher chem engg problems requires the graphical way of solving the problem… the calculator must also have high computing capabilities for easier integration and stuffs…
    Good luck with our career!!!!

  6. The TI-89 is the calculator that I used in college. It is a big help in calculus as well as the engineering courses. However, if you take the FE exam, you may not be able to use it.

  7. You have already received cogent answers. I agree that you should not rush out to buy a new calculator. Your TI 89 will probably be fine, but you may have the bad luck to encounter an instructor (or an engineering department) that insists on something else. So, wait and see, but expect to go on with the TI 89.
Reading your manual was good advice.
