Chemical and process engineering is extremely important aspect of engineering. It includes various stages such as, process design, simulation of process, integration of process and chemical process modeling.  Chemical and process engineering can be defined as, an important branch of engineering which deals with effect of process along with mechanical and chemical transformations of matter, conducted rigorously at a considerable scale. In chemical process engineering, irrespective of the scale of production (i.e. it doesn’t matter you want to manufacture products on large scale or small scale) you have to put in equal skill and efforts to get desired results. Chemical engineer should always pusses’ qualities like, optimization with realization, specification and adjustment.

Stages involved in chemical and process engineering are discussed below.

Process design:

Process design can be defined as a process which is designed or created for obtaining expected physical and chemical transformation of materials which are used during the process. It is considered as one of the most important or central stage of chemical engineering. As it brings together all the components in chemical engineering, it is also described as ‘summit’. In process design along with designing new facilities one can always modify existing facilities according to requirements of user or client. Like any other development process, process engineering also starts at conceptual level and further graduates to construction and fabrication levels.

Process simulation:

Process simulation can be defined as, a process which is used for design, development, analysis, and optimization of technical tasks. Process simulation is quite useful in chemical plants, power plants and other similar facilities. In simple words process simulation is representation based on model of chemical, physical, biological and many other processes which are technical and unit tasks in software. In process simulation it is extremely important that engineer should be thoroughly aware of physical as well as chemical properties of substances, mixtures and pure materials.

Process integration:

It is extremely important component of chemical and process engineering. The concept of process integration has two possible meanings and approaches, which can vary according to the situation. First approach concentrates on the interactions between different unit processes from the beginning, instead of looking at them separately. Engineers and scientists also call it integrated process synthesis or process design.

Second approach is a technique which is used to design a process which is useful in energy conservation and heat recovery. It is also called as pinch technology or heat and energy integration process.

Chemical process modeling:

Chemical process modeling can be defined as a computer modeling technique which is also part of chemical process designing. Special purpose software is used for chemical process modeling. This software is pretty useful in determining steady rate or dynamic behavior of any system. System components and connections are visible in process flow diagram. In chemical process modeling some times simulations are simple which may involve processes like mixing of two substances in a tank. Sometimes simulations are extremely complex such as aluminum refinery.
