Since I heard about the award that Prof. Dr. Zainuddin Abdul Manan is going to receive last year, I know this is not an ordinary award. It is a huge award given by a “big” guy to a “big” achiever. From what I know, he is going to Saudi Arabia and receive such a prestigious award from the Crown Princes of Saudi Arabia + a handsome amount of cash. That was last year’s news. Now, I want to say congratulations to him. The following post is written by Helen Tunnicliffe from ICheme.

THE PRINCE SULTAN International Prize for Water has been awarded to two members of IChemE Malaysia, Abdul Wahab Mohammad and Zainuddin Abd Manan.
The awards recognise outstanding work in tackling the problem of water shortages, pollution, desertification and drought, and provide funding for further research. The award was set up by Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
Mohammad was a co-winner of the award for Alternative (Non-traditional) Water Resources. He is deputy dean and professor (Membrane and Separations Technology), at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He graduated from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, US in 1989 with a BSc in chemical engineering, before going on to complete an MSc at Purdue University, US in 1991, and a PhD at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK in 1998. He began work as a tutor at UKM following the completion of his BSc and has since worked his way up through the ranks to his present position. He is a Fellow of IChemE.

Manan was a co-winner of the award for Water Resources Management & Protection. He is professor of chemical engineering and the founder of the Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He completed a BSc in chemical engineering from the University of Houston, US, and an MSc in process integration from UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester). He obtained his PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Manan has worked as a consultant in industry and has held various posts within the UTM including head of UTM’s chemical engineering department between 2000 and 2006. He is a Member of IChemE.
